10 лет назад они решились на эмиграцию в Новую Зеландию. Бари объяснял свое решение тем, что ему симпатичен политический строй, экономический уровень, природа, погода, да и сами люди. Он давно уже разочаровался в старой доброй Англии. Прожили в Christchurch всего полтора года - одолела настольгия, навалилась депрессия. Не продав жилье, вернулись назад в Англию. В Новую Зеландию выезжали каждые два года на пару месяцев.

I was disappointed not to get anything in the portrait section. These judges can be very perverse! I must admit I am looking forward to HPS meetings again.

Пишет, что они дома были, когда это произошло. Дом трясло, встряхивало 15 секунд, мебель падала, все рушилось вокруг, страшный грохот. Они
на пол бросились. Когда закончилось, выглянули из окна, везде клубы пыли от падающих зданий. Их деревянный дом практически не пострадал, в отличии от соседского кирпичного. Толчки повторялись, некоторые были чуть ли не такой же силы, что и первый. Ночь была бессоной, каждые 3-20 минут новый толчок. На следующий день толчки постепенно затихли....

Hello All,
Thanks for your emails and concern over the Christchurch disaster. Paddy and I are safe and well, and our house is still in one piece. However all services are off so just now we are staying with friends in Dune=in.
We were in the house preparing for a trip away when it struck, at about 1.00 pm. It's not easy to describe, but the entire house was shaking, gyrating and bouncing around for some 15 seconds. Furniture flying, stuff crashing about us, deafening noise. We just crouched to the floor. Then it was over I looked out and saw clouds of dust rising from the city as buildings fell to the ground. Because our house is timber and flexi=le the accelerative forces on it were reduced, and amazingly there is (we think) no structural damage, though our neighbours brick house is a wreck. Aftershocks came thick and fast, some nearly as strong as the original hit. No sleep that night, waiting for the next shake - anything from 3 minutes to 20 minutes apart. The shakes continued through the next day and are only now diminishing.
Over half the city was cut off power, and water, so no internet, tv= radio. Roads broken up, huge rifts appeared in some, and because the c=ty is built on low lying silt deposits, liquefaction has caused collapse and subsidence. Many people in the central city area were either killed outright or trapped by falling masonry. Death toll currently 113, with around 200 still missing. The PGG building, a modern multi storey office, collapsed. We have two acquaintences who work there, we haven't heard their fate. The entire CBD is closed off and will remain so for months. It is reckoned that one third of all buildings within the CDB will have to be demolished, and a half of all brick buildings likewise. Many fine heritage buildings have gone. The suburbs in line with the epicenter (including us) were badly hit. Thousands of homes are damaged, hundreds destroyed. We are only 2 or 3 miles from the epicentre which was in =yttleton harbour. Being in granite, the shock waves transmitted very well. Thousands have left Ch'=h for the time being including us.
Electricity and water are gradually being restored, sewage remains a problem. The Kiwis are remarkably resourceful people and are pulling together very well. Air New Zealand is offering $50 flights to anyone wanting out of Christchurch. Free LPG is offered to anyone. We found our mobile phones topped up with credit.
We return to the UK next week, and as far as I know flights are run=ing normally, the airport escaped undamaged.

ну он еще пишет, что полгорода было без света и воды, и, естественно, без тв и интернета. Дороги разрушены, к тому же город построен на илистой почве, все поплыло и рухнуло то, что не было разрущено землятресением. В центральной части города многие были завалены или погибли под развалинами зданий. Сейчас насчитывается 113 погибших и около 200 пропавших. Бизнес центр PGG разрушен полностью, никаких известий от двоих знакомых, работающих там. CBD (понятия не имею что это) полностью закрыто и, похоже, на несколько месяцев. Короче - пострадало много исторических зданий.
Их дом в 3-5 км от эпицентра. Водоснабжение и электричество восстановлены, но основная проблема - разрушенная канализация. Новозеландцы (киви ) незаурядный люди и стойко все переносят.
Местные авиалинии предлагают дешевые перелеты - 50 н.з. долларов, LPG - по-моему это их бензин, выдается бесплатно. На мобильники были зачислены деньги.
На следующей неделе они возвращаются назад.
